Understanding Resistor Identification
Resistors are the fundamental building blocks of electronics, used to control current flow. Because they are often too small to print numbers on, manufacturers use the IEC 60062 Color Code Standard. Ohm's Law & Color Logic
The resistance value is calculated using a base value multiplied by a power of 10. The color bands represent these digits.
The Formula
For a 4-band resistor:
$$ R = (Band1 \times 10 + Band2) \times Multiplier $$
Why Use a Digital Magnifier?
Modern resistors, especially 1/8th watt or 1/4 watt sizes, are incredibly small. The color bands can be difficult to distinguish with the naked eye, leading to calculation errors. By using your device's camera as a high-contrast macro lens, you can accurately identify whether a band is Red or Orange, saving you from building a faulty circuit.
